NOTTINGHAM, June 19, 2016

The 2016 Aegon Open has returned to Nottingham, boasting the secondlargest grass-court field in men’s tennis behind Wimbledon. World number 20 Kevin Anderson headlines the 48-man draw, which includes 2015 champion Denis Istomin and runner-up Sam Querrey.

Four main draw singles matches were scheduled on Sunday with NextGen star Taylor Fritz in action, losing to Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-2. The 18-year-old returned to the scene of his first ATP World Tour match, when he debuted with a win over Pablo Carreno-Busta at Nottingham in 2015. This time however, Mannarino was too strong for the US-American teenager. The world number 57 from France didn’t face a break point, converting four of his own to advance in only 53 minutes. Mannarino will take on 12th seed Paolo Lorenzi in the second round. The 34-year-old Italian is going to appear at his first grass court tournament of the season. Lorenzi saved six match points to clinch his 18th ATP Challenger career title in Caltanissetta last week.

In an all-British-battle Daniel Evans fought past wild card Liam Broady 3-6, 6-2, 7-6. The world number 92 from Birmingham won 74% of his first service points and broke his opponent twice to advance in two hours and eight minutes. Evans will next face the tournament’s number 16 Ricardas Berankis.

Evgeny Donskoy ousted Denis Kudla, winning 6-4, 6-4. The 26-year-old from Russia sent down eight aces and capitalized on three of his four break points to seal victory in one hour and 10 minutes. Donskoy will next meet Marcos Baghdatis, who is seeded ninth.

The all-Russian-affair between Mikhail Youzhny and Teymuraz Gabashvili was suspended due to rain in the afternoon with the latter leading 6-4, 3-3. Play will resume on Monday morning.
