VIENNA, July 14, 2016

With Andy Murray, the reigning Wimbledon champion will come to Vienna for the Erste Banke Open 500, held from 22 to 30 October 2016 in the Stadthalle. The world number two from Great Britain beat Milos Raonic in the final of the All England Championships to lift his second Wimbledon trophy, following his triumph in 2013.

“For me it’s the most important tournament of the year. I have had great moments here but also some bitter defeats. It is really special to gain the trophy here again. I am just enjoying this victory,” Murray was overwhelmed in London.

“Andy Murray played an outstanding tournament and more than deserves this triumph. He will gain additional confidence. We are very glad that with Andy Murray, the reigning Wimbledon champion will come to Vienna for the first time since Roger Federer in 2003,” Vienna’s tournament director Herwig Straka is looking forward to the ATP 500 event. In 2014, the world number two claimed the title in Vienna in a blockbuster final against David Ferrer.

In Austria’s capital, Murray will be joined by two fellow top 10-players. Local hero Dominic Thiem as well as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga from France have also entered the indoor tournament with a total prize money of €2,467,310.

The Austrian youngster will step into action on “THIEMstag”, Tuesday, October 25. “It is the day before national holiday in Austria and we hope for packed stands inside the arena,” Straka said.
