The ATP Challenger Tour is back in Mexico for the 12th edition of the Morelos Open Metaxchange – a $107,000 hard-court event being held at the Hotel Racquet Cuernavaca. Main draw action got underway Monday with a full schedule of singles and doubles matches, along with the conclusion of qualifying.
On Estadio Morelos, Dan Martin of Canada came from a set down to defeat top-seeded Argentine Federico Agustin Gomez 3-6, 7-6(2), 7-6(3) in one of the tightest matches of the day. The world No. 386 withstood 22 aces and broke his rival one time to secure victory two hours and 17 minutes.
“Very excited to get through to the second round. I did everything I could on court and it paid off,” Martin said. “On paper it’s a good win, but overall I’m really happy with the way I’m playing and the work I’ve been putting in over the last couple of months.”
Third seed Oliver Crawford from Great Britain advanced with a 6-4, 6-1 win over German Max Wiskandt, while sixth seed Andres Andrade of Ecuador defeated US-American Aidan Mayo 6-4, 7-6(4). Eighth seed Andres Martin from the United States battled past Vadym Ursu of Ukraine 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-6(7) in the longest match of the day, which lasted two hours and 37 minutes.
Qualifying also wrapped up, with Robin Catry, Jake Delaney, Miguel Tobon, Tibo Colson, and Takeru Yuzuki earning their place in the main draw.
Mexico will have six players in the singles main draw, after Alan Rubio Fierros secured his spot with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win over Samuel Heredia. Rubio Fierros joins Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez, Alex Hernandez, Rodrigo Alujas, Alan Magadan and Alejandro Hayen in the main draw. The six-player Mexican representation marks one of the strongest local showings in recent editions of the tournament, combining established names and emerging talent competing in front of home support.
