SAO PAULO/STARNBERG, March 28, 2026
The finalists of the singles draw at the inaugural LA Open will be decided on Saturday afternoon at the Jockey Club de Sao Paulo in Brazil. The action on Center Court begins at 3:00 p.m. local time with Argentina’s Roman Andres Burruchaga taking on Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Prado Angelo in the first semifinal. Later, Portugal’s Jaime Faria will face fellow Bolivian Hugo Dellien for a place in the championship match of the ATP Challenger 100 clay-court event.
All four players earned their semifinal spots with strong performances in Friday’s quarterfinals. Prado Angelo was the first to advance, winning the most closely contested match of the day. The No. 8 seed defeated Peru’s Gonzalo Bueno in three sets, 4–6, 6–2, 6–2, securing his first semifinal appearance on the ATP Challenger Tour this season.
“I’m very happy with the win, it was a great match. I’m also happy to be in the semifinals of a Challenger 100, and I hope to go as far as possible,” he said afterward.
Shortly after, Burruchaga advanced under unusual circumstances. The son of Jorge Burruchaga – who famously scored the winning goal in the 1986 FIFA World Cup final – was leading compatriot Alex Barrena 6–1, 3–1 when Barrena was forced to retire from the match.
“I was playing very well and I’m happy with my performance. I don’t know exactly what happened to Alex, but I wish him a speedy recovery,” Burruchaga commented.
Dellien, the No. 6 seed, secured his place in the semifinals with a hard-fought victory over Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera, winning 6–4, 7–6(4). The Bolivian, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 64 in 2022 and is currently ranked No. 159, expressed his satisfaction: “It was a very tough match. Tomi is a great player. I’m very happy to have won and competed well against him.” His victory also keeps alive the possibility of an all-Bolivian final should both he and Prado Angelo win their semifinals.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the day, Faria continued his impressive run by defeating top-seeded US-American Emilio Nava. The Portuguese player, currently ranked No. 157, delivered a solid performance to win 7–6(3), 6–1 against the world No. 74.
“I played a solid match from start to finish. I maintained a good attitude throughout, and that was the most important thing. Emilio is a great player, so I’m very happy with the win,” said Faria.
