Wednesday delivered a wave of home success at the Danube Upper Austria Open in Mauthausen, highlighted by an impressive singles run from Lukas Neumayer and a dramatic doubles comeback led by Philipp Kohlschreiber and Joel Schwaerzler.

Neumayer produced a composed and determined performance to defeat last year’s finalist Tomas Barrios Vera in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-4, securing his first-ever quarterfinal appearance at the tournament. The 23-year-old Austrian showed focus from the outset, dictating play with powerful groundstrokes and maintaining his nerve in key moments, particularly in a tightly contested first-set tiebreak.

Although Barrios Vera raised his level late in the opening set and fought hard throughout, Neumayer remained resilient. After exchanging breaks in the second set, the Austrian regained control with confident, aggressive play to close out the match. Reflecting afterward, he acknowledged the challenge but emphasized his belief in maintaining a high level throughout.

Earlier in the day, US-American teenager Darwin Blanch staged an impressive comeback against third seed Hugo Gaston of France, overturning a slow start to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. After struggling with errors early on, Blanch found his rhythm, improved his serve, and dominated the final set to book his place in the quarterfinals.

In another closely fought encounter, Laslo Djere edged past Jan Choinski in two tight tiebreak sets, 7-6(2), 7-6(2). Despite missed opportunities in the second set, Djere relied on his experience to stay composed in crucial moments and seal the victory.

Czech qualifier Matthew William Donald continued his impressive run at the ATP Challenger Tour 100 tournament, fighting past German youngster Diego Dedura, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.

The highlight of the day, however, came in doubles action. Veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber, partnering Austria’s Joel Schwaerzler, delivered a remarkable comeback win against the second-seeded pair Daniel Cukierman and Trey Hilderbrand. After dropping the first set, the duo fought back to claim a dramatic 4–6, 7–6(4), 10–8 victory.

For Kohlschreiber, the match marked a memorable return, as he joked about proving he could still compete at a high level. Schwaerzler, meanwhile, praised both the experience and the guidance of his seasoned partner, noting how much he benefited from Kohlschreiber’s energy and on-court advice.
