Following his maiden triumph on the ATP Challenger Tour in Abidjan last week, Gauthier Onclin continued his fine run of form in the Ivory Coast by celebrating his second title in as many weeks. The 25-year-old Belgian lifted the trophy of the Cote d’Ivoire Open 2.

In a rain-interrupted final between the top two seeds on Sunday, Onclin defeated Michael Mmoh from the United States 6-3, 6-4. Top seed Onclin converted three of his nine break-point chances to succeed in one hour and 48 minutes.

Onclin battled his way into the championship match with wins over British qualifier Oscar Weightman, Mert Alkaya from Turkey as well as No. 4 seed and home favourite Eliakim Coulibaly.

By winning the biggest title of his career, Onclin earned $17,000 in prize money as well as 75 ATP Ranking points, reaching a new career-high of world No. 183.

The ATP Challenger Tour’s two-week stay in Ivory Coast has come to an end, marking another important step in the tour’s growing presence on the African continent. With Abidjan now in the rearview mirror, attention shifts east to the Republic of Congo, where the Brazzaville Challenger event will continue the African swing.
