For the first time in his career, Argentina’s Luciano Ambrogi has been crowned champion of the AAT Challenger IEB+ Tucuman, defeating Colombia’s Johan Rodriguez 6-2, 6-3 in Sunday’s singles final.

Playing on the clay courts of the Tucuman Lawn Tennis Club, Ambrogi delivered an impressive performance to overcome Rodríguez, who had advanced to the main draw through qualifying. The Argentine began the week ranked World No. 408 and, thanks to his triumph, has climbed to No. 324 in the Live ATP Rankings—the highest position of his career.

For the 22-year-old from Rosario, who had previously won only two professional titles on the ITF World Tennis Tour—both at M15 events in Antalya in 2023—the Challenger trophy represents the most significant achievement of his career.

Holding the trophy after the final, Ambrogi reflected on the mental challenges he had overcome.

“It was incredibly difficult, but mostly from a mental perspective,” he said. “I consider myself a very emotional person. Obviously, I dreamed of winning a title like this, and sometimes I think that worked against me. When I stepped onto the court and realized I had a chance or was playing well, I used to overthink things. I’m happy that I was able to overcome that this week and finally make it happen.”

He added: “There have been many tournaments, many conversations and a lot of hard work. At times I felt sad because things weren’t working out the way I wanted. I felt I had the level, but the results weren’t coming. Now I have this trophy, which gives me a lot of happiness and a lot of confidence for what lies ahead.”

Ambrogi competed in all six ATP Challenger tournaments held in Argentina this season, five of which were organized by the Argentine Tennis Association. His success once again highlighted the importance of the Argentine Challenger circuit in developing local talent. Earlier this year, Guido Justo in Tigre I and Juan Manuel La Serna in Cordoba also captured the first Challenger titles of their careers on home soil.

The victory carried additional significance for Argentine tennis. It marked the nation’s 456th Challenger title and allowed Argentina to remain the most successful country of the 2026 Challenger season with 13 tournament victories.

During the trophy ceremony, Ambrogi became emotional when speaking about the family members who had supported him throughout his tennis journey, particularly his father and brother, who travelled to Tucuman to watch the final.

“They experience this the same way I do,” Ambrogi said. “We are a very emotional family. We enjoy these moments together, and you can see how much they have supported me over the years. My family made a huge effort so that I could play tennis. My brother sacrificed a lot so that I could pursue my career, and they deserve this title just as much as I do.”

He also dedicated the victory to his mother.

“I also want to thank my mother, who stayed at home. She was always doing everything she could to help me find opportunities for my career. I dedicate this title to her.”
