Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler has announced that he will retire from professional tennis following this week’s Zug Open ATP Challenger event. The 30-year-old revealed the decision in an emotional message posted on Instagram, confirming that the event will be his final appearance on the professional tour.

“It has been an incredible ride,” Huesler wrote. “Reaching world No. 47, wining an ATP title in Sofia, representing Switzerland in numerous occasions and being able to compete with and beat some of the best players in the world. I am filled with gratitude towards everyone who made this journey possible. I am excited for the next chapter and can’t wait to see you on court next week.”

Huesler enjoyed the most memorable moment of his career in October 2022, when he captured the ATP title at the Sofia Open in Bulgaria with a surprise victory over Denmark’s Holger Rune in the final. The triumph marked his breakthrough on the ATP Tour and helped propel him to a career-high ranking of world No. 47 in February 2023.

In recent seasons, however, the Zurich-born left-hander struggled to maintain that level of success and has fallen to a position outside the world’s top 300.

For his farewell appearance in Zug, Huesler has been awarded a wildcard by the tournament organisers, giving Swiss fans the opportunity to see him compete one final time on home soil. He will take on Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena in the opening round.
