MASPALOMAS/STARNBERG, July 26, 2026
The ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas got underway on Sunday with the opening round of qualifying at the Club Conde Jackson Tennis Maspalomas, where the seeded favorites progressed as expected and local wildcard Gabriela Paun delighted the home crowd with a hard-fought victory.
Second seed Joelle Lilly Sophie Steur of Germany made a confident start to her campaign, defeating France’s Alyssa Reguer 6-1, 6-3. Third seed Laura Hietaranta of Finland also advanced comfortably, requiring just over an hour to dispatch Spain’s Lidia Gonzalez 6-2, 6-0.
The match of the day featured Gran Canaria’s own Gabriela Paun against sixth seed Nahia Berecoechea of France. The 2025 Spanish junior champion claimed the opening set before Berecoechea fought back to level the contest. In an entertaining decider that lasted more than two hours, Paun held her nerve to secure a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory and book her place in the final qualifying round.
Spain’s Lorena Solar also advanced after defeating compatriot Alba Rey 6-1, 7-5.
Elsewhere, Italy’s Laura Mair, Eleonora Alvisi, Camila Zanolini and Sofia Rocchetti all progressed, alongside Germany’s Gina Marie Dittmann, France’s Emma Lene, the Netherlands’ Demi Tran and Serbia’s Elena Milovanovic.
The second and final qualifying round will be played on Monday from 9:30 a.m. local time, with eight players earning spots in the main draw of the ITF W100 DISA Gran Canaria-Maspalomas. The tournament is the only World Tennis Tour W100 event held in Spain this season.
