The first-round action of the World Tennis Tour W100 DISA Gran Canaria Maspalomas 2026 got underway at the Club Conde Jackson Tennis Maspalomas on Tuesday, with top seed Julia Grabher and fourth seed Andrea Lazaro safely advancing to the second round.
Former champion Grabher, who lifted the title in Maspalomas in 2023, overcame Germany’s Joelle Lilly Sophie Steur 6-4, 6-0. After trailing early in the opening set, the Austrian quickly found her rhythm, turning the match around before dominating the second set.
Spain’s Andrea Lazaro also booked her place in the last 16, defeating Kazakhstan’s Zhibek Kulambayeva 6-3, 7-5. While the Catalan controlled the opening set, she had to fend off a determined challenge in the second to seal victory in straight sets.
Another Spaniard progressing was Maria Garcia Cid, who defeated Germany’s Mina Hodzic 6-4, 6-4.
One of the standout performances of the day came from Turkish qualifier Berfu Cengiz, who stunned fifth seed Darya Astakhova of Russia with a commanding 6-0, 6-0 victory. Fellow qualifier Isabella Maria Serban of Italy also impressed, showcasing an aggressive serve-and-volley game to beat Germany’s Gina Marie Dittmann 7-6(5), 6-1.
The longest and most dramatic match of the day featured Spain’s Carmen Gallardo and Portugal’s Matilde Jorge. After dropping the opening set, Gallardo fought back to claim a hard-earned 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory after nearly three hours on court.
Seventeen-year-old local wildcard Gabriela Paun exited the tournament despite an encouraging performance against Germany’s Caroline Werner. The young Canary Islands player held a four-game lead in the opening set and produced several outstanding rallies before Werner’s experience proved decisive in a 7-5, 6-2 win.
Elsewhere, France’s Emma Lene recovered from a set down to defeat Argentina’s Maria Lourdes Carle 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, while Germany’s Anna-Lena Friedsam advanced with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Sweden’s Lisa Zaar.
First-round action concludes on Wednesday with the tournament debut of three-time Gran Canaria champion Arantxa Rus and former Roland Garros semifinalist Nadia Podoroska. The remaining doubles quarterfinal spots will also be decided. Admission to the tournament remains free throughout the week, subject to venue capacity.
