Four Italians have successfully made their way through qualifying at the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Todi | Sidernestor Tennis Cup. Lorenzo Carboni, Alexander Weis, Carlo Alberto Caniato and Michele Mecarelli all secured their places in the main draw, while Juan Cruz Martin Manzano was subsequently promoted as a lucky loser after Federico Bondioli withdrew with a minor abdominal injury.

As a result, 13 Italian players are now set to compete in the ATP Challenger 75, being played on the clay courts of Tennis Club Todi 1971. Qualifying concluded on Monday morning before the main draw got underway in the early afternoon. Marco Cecchinato is also set to make his first-round appearance against Nick Hardt, while Stefano Travaglia has arrived in Todi following his weekend commitments in the German Bundesliga. The first seed will begin his campaign on Tuesday against Argentina’s Nicolas Kicker.

Travaglia returns to Todi

A finalist in Todi in 2025 and a familiar face at the tournament over the years, Travaglia was warmly welcomed back to Umbria by friends and familiar faces. The 34-year-old from Ascoli Piceno is currently ranked No. 140 in the world and enters this year’s tournament as the top seed.

Travaglia has enjoyed several strong results in 2026, including a quarter-final appearance at the ATP 250 in Bastad and a Challenger title in Zadar.

“I’ve always felt comfortable in Todi, so it’s a pleasure to come back and work with the Marchesini family’s organisation again,” Travaglia said. “This year I’m also the top seed, so I’ll try to have a good tournament. The year started well with the third round of qualifying at the Australian Open. Then I decided to play qualifying at a number of important tournaments, so perhaps I had a few fewer results than I would have liked, although I then won the Challenger in Zadar in the spring.”

“Just a few weeks ago I reached the quarterfinals in Bastad and I feel that I can continue along this path. I’m always motivated, regardless of the level of the tournament.”

Travaglia will open against Kicker and could potentially face one of the many Italian players in the draw in the later rounds.

“Tennis remains an individual sport, but obviously I see many young players coming through on the circuit, and many of them are already approaching the Top 300,” he said. “Playing against them isn’t easy, but I have the experience to have my say.”

Four more Italians reach the main draw

Lorenzo Carboni secured his place in the main draw following a convincing victory over Germany’s Maximilian Homberg. After a dramatic opening qualifying round, in which he defeated fellow Italian Gabriele Maria Noce 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(2), the 2006-born player from Alghero dominated Homberg 6-1, 6-1 on Center Court.

The result marks another positive step for Carboni as he continues his comeback from a shoulder injury.

Alexander Weis, who has also recently returned to competition, won an all-Italian battle against Juan Cruz Martin Manzano 6-4, 6-4. Michele Mecarelli advanced when Eric Vanshelboim retired while trailing 3-6, 0-3, while Carlo Alberto Caniato completed the Italian quartet with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over fellow qualifier Gabriele Crivellaro.

There was disappointment for Gianmarco Ferrari and Stefano D’Agostino, who were eliminated by Ukraine’s Nikita Mashtakov and Georgii Kravchenko respectively.

With Manzano entering the draw as a lucky loser, the Italian contingent remains at 13 players. Tuesday’s schedule will feature two all-Italian encounters, with Francesco Passaro facing Caniato and Francesco Forti taking on Mecarelli.

Weis will face second seed Lukas Neumayer, Manzano will meet fourth seed Federico Agustin Gomez, while Carboni will take on Poland’s Pawel Michalski.
