TODI/STARNBERG, August 17, 2026
From a hard-fought three-set battle against Gabriele Basile in the opening round to a commanding performance in the final, Maxim Mrva has crowned a breakthrough week by winning the Internazionali di Tennis Città di Todi | Sidernestor Tennis Cup. The Czech prodigy, born in 2007, dominated Nicolas Kicker 6-2, 6-2 in front of a sold-out Centre Court at the Tennis Club Todi 1971, venue of the ATP Challenger 75 organized by MEF Tennis Events.
Mrva produced an authoritative display throughout the final, showcasing the remarkable speed of his arm that has become one of the defining features of his game. Able to turn defense into attack in an instant, the 19-year-old once again demonstrated why he has long been regarded as one of the brightest prospects in world tennis.

By adding his name to the tournament’s prestigious roll of honor, Mrva continues a long tradition in Todi, an event that has served as an important stepping stone for numerous players who later established themselves at the highest level of the ATP Tour.
The title also gives Mrva a major boost in the rankings. Starting the week at No. 309 in the world, he will rise to a projected No. 218 when the rankings are updated next week — putting him firmly on course to pursue his next major goal: qualifying for the Grand Slam tournaments.
For Kicker, it was another memorable run in Todi that once again ended just short of the title. The former world No. 78 had previously reached the final here in 2015, losing to Aljaz Bedene, and again in 2022, when Pedro Cachin denied him the trophy. This time, too, the Argentine was unable to complete the final step.
Mrva: “I was very close to not playing the tournament”
Mrva’s breakthrough comes almost exactly five years after he announced himself on the international stage by winning Les Petits As, widely regarded as the unofficial world championship for under-14 players. In 2021, he defeated Italy’s Federico Cina in the final and has since been considered one of the most promising young players in the game.
After losing two Challenger finals in Hersonissos — one last year and another earlier this season — Mrva finally broke through in Todi. His connection with Italy and the local fans grew stronger with every match, culminating in a dominant victory over Kicker, who had eliminated three Italian players on his way to the final: Stefano Travaglia, Francesco Passaro and Marco Cecchinato.
The moment of victory was an emotional one for Mrva. After throwing himself to the ground, he looked toward the sky in tribute to his father.
“This is one of the most special weeks of my life,” Mrva said. “I wasn’t coming from a very good period and I had even thought about taking some rest and skipping the tournament. In the end, I played fantastic tennis and, on top of that, I ate quite a lot of pasta and pizza. Todi is a very beautiful town and the people welcomed me amazingly.”
Winning his first Challenger title has also lifted a weight from his shoulders.
“I’m definitely relieved to have taken a lot of pressure off myself, especially after losing my first final in Hersonissos,” he said. “This week I played aggressive tennis and it worked. Now the goal is to play the Grand Slam qualifying events.”
Mrva’s rise also adds another chapter to his growing connection with Italy. Last November, he was invited to serve as a practice partner for Jannik Sinner during the Nitto ATP Finals.
“It was a fantastic experience,” Mrva recalled. “He asked me to play with him quite often and gave me a lot of useful advice for my career. He plays tennis like an alien, but he’s also a fantastic person and treated me really well. He has all my admiration.”
And what about his own dreams?
“Sinner and Alcaraz seem to be on another planet right now. I just want to do my best.”
For Mrva, the journey has now entered a new phase — and after his breakthrough in Todi, the next destination is already in sight.
