Canadian Cadence Brace captured the title at the Tenis Paulista Pro Series – ITF W35 Barueri on Sunday. The third seed and world No. 255 battled back from a set down to defeat seventh-seeded Chinese player Lan Mi 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 after two hours and 38 minutes on Centre Court at Alphaville Tenis Clube.
“It was a very difficult match, without a doubt. She started playing at a very high level and I had to keep fighting and find a way to get into the match. I’m very happy that I was able to react and get the win,” Brace said after the final.
The victory earned the Canadian the second professional title of her career. Brace had previously lifted the trophy at the ITF W35 event in Wichita.
For her triumph in Barueri, Brace received US$4,860 in prize money and 35 WTA Ranking points. Runner-up Lan Mi took home US$2,637 and earned 23 ranking points.
Three Weeks of Women’s Professional Tennis in Sao Paulo
The ITF W35 in Barueri brought an end to a three-week stretch of women’s professional tournaments organized by the Federacao Paulista de Tenis (FPT).
The circuit had previously visited Campos do Jordao for two consecutive ITF W15 events, with Brazilian players claiming both titles. Luiza Fullana won the first tournament, while Carolina Bohrer lifted the trophy in the second week.
According to FPT president Danilo Gaino, hosting the three tournaments underlines the federation’s commitment to creating more opportunities for Brazilian players to compete at home, earn valuable ranking points and gain experience on the professional circuit.
“We are closing three very positive weeks for women’s tennis, with excellent matches and, above all, many Brazilian players having the opportunity to compete at home. We had two Brazilian champions in Campos do Jordao, young players achieving important results and, in Barueri, once again saw our athletes competing against opponents of a very high level,” Gaino said.
“It is precisely these kinds of opportunities that help develop women’s tennis, allowing our players to gain experience, confidence and important ranking points without having to leave Brazil.”
Following the three-week women’s series, the Federacao Paulista de Tenis will now turn its attention to the men’s professional circuit. Beginning September 7, the federation will host the ITF M15 in Leme, continuing its calendar of international tournaments in the state of São Paulo.
“Our work continues. After these three weeks dedicated to women’s tennis, we will now have the M15 in Leme, also giving our male players the opportunity to compete in a professional tournament here in São Paulo,” Gaino added.
“The federation has been working to strengthen this calendar and create more and more opportunities for our athletes to develop and progress on the professional circuit.”
