Although Spain and Kazakhstan have not shared much history at the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainsberg Finals – their only previous meeting came when Spain garnered a 3-0 victory in group stage at the 2022 Finals in Glasgow, Scotland – their quarterfinal match Wednesday evening was filled with plenty of passion and heart. And the teams provided a memorable finish, too, that rewarded the Shenzhen Bay Sports Centre fans who stayed until the end of the tie just before midnight.
Without the benefit of World No. 1 and US Open champion Elena Rybakina in the lineup, the Kazakhs relied upon the BJK Cup ever-present Yulia Putintseva, who contested her 34th tie and earned her 28th match-win in the competition when she defeated Spanish No. 1 Cristina Bucsa, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, in one hour and 51 minutes, to level the tie at 1-all.
However, Putintseva couldn’t do it all by herself, while Bucsa quickly shook off her defeat and came back out to play doubles in the match decider. Bucsa and Sara Sorribes Tormo fought past their Kazakh opponents, 6-2, 7-5, in two hours and seven minutes to lift Spain to a 2-1 victory over Kazakhstan.

Afterward, Spain team captain Carla Suarez Navarro said of her winning doubles team: “They play with passion, with full heart. That’s it. We are really happy. Now we continue.”
The triumph advanced Spain into the semifinal round of the Billie Jean King Cup for the first time since 2008. They will face Czechia, which defeated Great Britain 2-0 in the quarterfinals, on Friday evening.

Bouzas Maneiro gives Spain early lead
In the opening match of the Spain-Kazakhstan tie, No. 93 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro of Spain overpowered 382nd-ranked Sonja Zhizhenbayeva of Kazakhstan, 6-2, 6-2, in 62 minutes to give Spain a 1-0 lead. Bouzas Maneiro dropped just five points on her first serve, faced no break points and converted four of eight break-point opportunities. She outpointed her opponent 60-37.
“I’m super happy with my performance today and to be able to get the point for Spain,” Bouzas Maneiro said during her on-court interview. “I’m really happy to be back here in Shenzhen.
“There was a little bit of pressure, but it was positive pressure. I’m here to share my confidence with my team. I’m just trying to focus on my team. We are fighting for our team.”

Later, during her news conference, Bouzas Maneiro added: “I was a little bit nervous at the beginning. You’re playing for your team, for your country, so it’s not easy.
“I was trying to take that pressure to the positive way. Yeah, really happy to give the point to Spain.”
Putintseva levels tie for Kazakhstan
Next, No. 78 Putintseva hit five aces – including on match point – and won 74 percent (37 of 50) of her first-serve points against the 44th-ranked Bucsa. She converted five of seven break points and outpointed Bucsa 82-65 in this battle of No. 1 players.
“Every tie is special to play for Kazakhstan,” Putintseva said during her on-court interview. “I really enjoy and appreciate the support I get from my team – my dad is here, too – and it’s a great feeling to have this great support behind your back.”

Later, during her news conference, Putintseva added: “The third set I was very focused not to do any mistakes. I thought if she wants to win this match, she has to hit winners, and hit winners not in the first two shots, because I’m going to run and get everything back, then we will see what can happen. That worked in the end.”
Kazakhstan looked to reach the semifinal round at the BJK Cup Finals for the first time, having once equaled their best performance in the competition by reaching the quarterfinals this year. Instead, Spain returns to the last four for the first time in 18 years with its victory over the Kazakhs.
Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo put Spain over the top
With the tie deadlocked, it came down to the deciding doubles point between Kazakhstan and Spain. The Kazakhs put forth the team of Anna Danilina and Zhibek Kulambayeva, while Spain countered with Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo. The Spaniards raced to win the first set 6-2 after gaining a double-break lead at 5-1.
Then, at 3-all in the second set, Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo saved six break points and eventually held serve during a 10-deuce, 26-point marathon seventh game. Later, at 5-all, Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo fought off six more break points to hold serve during an eight-deuce, 22-point thriller that gave the Spaniards a 6-5 advantage.

Soon, as the match reached the two-hour mark, Spain gained a couple of match points that were quickly erased. Then, a double fault by Kulambayeva gave Spain another match-point opportunity but Danilina saved it with an overhead smash winner.
Finally, with a fourth match point, Spain secured the match victory on an unforced error by Danilina to cap a 14-point final game – and with it, the Spaniards won the tie to remain in the chase for the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup title.

Bucsa and Sorribes Tormo outpointed their opponents 90-81. They converted five of eight break points while saving 18 of 20 break points they faced.
“I gave everything that I had on the singles game,” Bucsa said during her team’s post-match news conference. “Then on doubles, all the crowd and my team, they support me so much. I try to give my last drop of energy. I’m very happy for that winning.”

Spain accepting of its underdog status
Although Spain came into this year’s BJK Cup competition as somewhat of an underdog, knowing it likely has to beat both Czechia and defending champion Italy to win the title, Suarez Navarro is accepting of the team’s status and welcomes the challenge that lies ahead.
“I think we are really motivated. We want to win the championship,” she said during the team’s pre-tournament news conference on Monday.
After her team’s victory Wednesday, Suarez Navarro said: “We are really happy. I’m really proud of all my players. They really make a really good and strong effort. This tie was tough.”
Bouzas Maneiro added: “In these weeks I really enjoy it because is such a different week for us that we are playing, like, alone the rest of the year. I really think that we have good teammates. We have a good relationship between us. For me, in my case personally, I really like it. I enjoy it a lot.
“I’m trying to talk to them, learn about them. You have more people by your side. That’s really good for us for playing and for being here and enjoy this week because I think that’s the main point, trying to enjoy it and do it our best.”
