Czechia and Spain contested the first of the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup Finals by Gainbridge semifinals on Friday, with both nations looking to return to the title final following significant absences.
Czechia last appeared in the final eight years ago, in 2018, but it represents a significant title-drought for the 11-time champions. As for Spain, a five-time winner in the 1990s, a semifinal victory Friday would advance them to their first Billie Jean King Cup final since 2008.
In their seventh meeting – and second one in consecutive years after meeting in the 2025 Qualifiers – the two teams came in level at 3-all in previous meetings in the team competition.
As it happened, Czechia shut out Spain 2-0 in dynamic fashion to reach their 13th Billie Jean King Cup Finals championship tie.

World No. 8 Karolina Muchova gave the Czechs a 1-0 lead following her 7-5, 6-4 victory over 93rd-ranked Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in one hour and 39 minutes. Playing cool and calm, Muchova won 70 percent (38 of 54) of her first-serve points, converted four of six break points and outpointed her opponent 74-61. It was Muchova’s first appearance in the Czech lineup since the 2022 Finals.

“We have such a strong team and so many options,” Muchova said during her news conference.
“Today I was happy to get on the court and play in that atmosphere. I’m very happy that I managed to bring the first point to the Czech Republic.”

While Muchova set the stage for Czechia, it was World No. 6 Linda Noskova who took control of her match with No. 44 Cristina Bucsa in the second set and clinched the tie with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory that was completed in one hour and 29 minutes. She struck seven aces, converted three of four break points, and outpointed Bucsa 75-55. It was Noskova’s seventh straight BJK Cup victory.

“We definitely want to make our captain proud,” Noskova said during her team’s news conference. “The last time we won it, [Barbora] was on the team. It would be quite beautiful for all of us to have her part of the team and win it once again, just from a different position.
“But I always love to play for the team no matter what. No matter the circumstances or whether we’re playing the finals or the qualies, nothing changes for me.”

Despite losing to Czechia, Spain team captain Carla Suarez Navarro remained upbeat. “I am really proud of my players, the way they fight, the way they compete, also the feeling that I have,” she said. “They are all together. They have the same goal. They have the same dream. We have to work. We have to improve. I know how difficult this competition is. I think this year we make a step forward.”
For the second-straight tie, Czechia clinched during singles and did not have to play doubles. On Sunday, they will face the winner of Saturday’s semifinal between two-time defending champion Italy and Ukraine.
“Obviously, I’m very, very proud of my team,” Czech team captain Barbora Strykova said. “Such an incredible group of players I have. To be in the final as a captain, for me being in this position for one year, is something if someone would tell me this, I would not believe. With such a team I have, it’s possible.
“The last step we have on Sunday. I feel like everybody wants it so much; we have the chance to lift the trophy. Last time we were in the final, 2018, which was my last year in Billie Jean King Cup as a player, so it’s surreal, but in the same time it’s very real.”

Friday marked the second time Czechia and Spain have met in a Billie Jean King Cup semifinal. Spain won their previous semifinal tie, played on neutral ground in Las Vegas, Nev. (U.S.), eventually finishing runner-up to Team USA.
“Quotable …”
“I’m always saying that in this competition everything can happen. It’s about teams, about your country, not just about yourself. Of course, they have amazing team. I think they have good relationship between them. That’s a good point for them. We also have it.”
