Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi emerged as the champion of the III International Ladies Open, capping a memorable week at the Clube de Tenis e Padel de Lagos in Portugal by adding the singles trophy to the doubles title she had secured the previous day.
At just 17 years and three months old, the Indian teenager became the youngest player from her country to win a title at this level, breaking the record of compatriot Sania Mirza. The former world No. 1 in doubles and No. 27 in singles claimed her first title in this category at the age of 17 years and 10 months in Lagos, Nigeria.
In Sunday’s final, Rajeshwaran Revathi (No. 1038) showcased her considerable talent to defeat 28-year-old Spaniard Celia Cervino Ruiz (No. 587), winning 6-4, 6-2 after 90 minutes of play.
“I simply didn’t have the physical strength left. I was already feeling tired during yesterday’s semi-final. Congratulations to Maaya, who is already a great player,” admitted the Galician, who gave everything she had despite her fatigue. Cervino Ruiz fought back from 1-4 down in the opening set and came within two points of forcing a 5-5 scoreline, but the Indian held her nerve to close out the set.
Rajeshwaran Revathi showed no signs of being overwhelmed by the occasion, despite contesting the first World Tennis Tour final of her career. The teenager, who is also ranked inside the junior world’s top 20, lived up to the expectations surrounding her emerging talent. She remained composed in the closing stages of the first set before taking control of the second with greater aggression and consistency.
“It has been a memorable week here in Lagos. Everything went well, and I hope to come back,” said the new champion, impressing with her confidence and maturity during the post-match interview. Looking ahead, she remained relaxed about her future prospects: “I don’t have any expectations. I know I will still play some junior tournaments as well as events on the World Tennis Tour.”
The trophy was presented to the champion by Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos, bringing the third edition of the International Ladies Open to a memorable conclusion.
