David Ferrer has informed the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET) of his decision to step down as captain of the Spanish Davis Cup Team at the end of the 2026 season, relinquishing the final year of his contract to embark on a new professional chapter.

RFET President Miguel Diaz confirmed the news, expressing his appreciation for Ferrer’s contribution to Spanish tennis both as a player and as captain.

“David Ferrer’s journey as captain of Spain’s Davis Cup team will come to an end on December 31, 2026. At the RFET, we respect his professional decision and are extremely grateful for the commitment and talent he has devoted to our national team. As a player, he was a legend of Spanish tennis, and over these past years he has demonstrated that his contribution from the bench has been equally outstanding. He has had the opportunity to give several young players their debuts in the Spanish team, and they have done so successfully. Spanish tennis has always been excellently represented through his presence and professionalism,” Diaz stated.

He also recalled Spain’s run to the 2025 Davis Cup final, where the team finished as runners-up, adding: “We all remember the 2025 Davis Cup final, in which our team achieved a highly commendable second place in the world. As president of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, I would like to thank David for his dedication.”

Ferrer also shared a personal statement announcing his decision:

“Hello everyone!

I wanted to announce that this will be my final year as Davis Cup captain, as I have decided to relinquish my position for 2027.

I would like to thank the RFET for giving me the opportunity to fulfil one of my dreams: becoming captain of my country’s Davis Cup team. I also want to thank all the players and everyone who has accompanied me throughout this journey. It has been a privilege to share this experience with all of them.

The reasons behind this decision are purely personal and reflect my desire to embark on a new chapter.

From now on, my sole focus and motivation is to guide the Spanish team towards winning another Davis Cup title. We have a wonderful challenge ahead of us in Bologna, where, as always, the players themselves will once again be the true protagonists!

Thank you all!”
