The Costa do Sauipe Open delivered another day of exciting tennis on Tuesday, with the first-round action continuing at the ATP Challenger 125 tournament held at the Costa do Sauipe Resorts tennis complex in Bahia, Brazil. Backed by the home crowd, Thiago Monteiro, Eduardo Ribeiro and Joao Lucas Reis recorded important victories to book their places in the second round.

Returning home after a series of tournaments in Europe, Monteiro defeated 17-year-old Leonardo Storck, one of Brazil’s most promising young talents, 7-5, 6-4. Storck had successfully come through qualifying to make his debut in the main draw of the biggest tournament of his career.

Despite securing the straight-sets victory, Monteiro was full of praise for his young opponent and highlighted his technical abilities.

“He has a lot of potential, a good forehand and a very good one-handed backhand. I think he will be in a very good position in a few years. He still lacks a little experience, but he has a great game,” Monteiro said.

Eduardo Ribeiro also advanced to the second round after making the most of a lucky loser opportunity. Having lost to Luis Felipe Miguel in the final round of qualifying, Ribeiro entered the main draw as a lucky loser and produced an impressive performance to defeat crowd favourite Guto Miguel 6-3, 6-1.

The victory was particularly meaningful for Ribeiro, who had previously entered three tournaments as a lucky loser but had never managed to win his opening match.

“I had entered three tournaments as a lucky loser before, but I lost in the first round every time. This was the first time I was actually able to take advantage of the opportunity. Despite having very little time between yesterday and today, I managed to identify what I needed to improve and stayed calm to execute my game plan,” Ribeiro explained.

Joao Lucas Reis completed the successful day for the Brazilian players by overcoming Argentina’s Santiago Rodriguez Taverna 7-6(2), 6-2. Reis underlined his satisfaction with his current form, the match rhythm he has built throughout the season and the added motivation of competing on home soil alongside his family.

“I’m happy with the moment I’m going through. I’ve been playing a lot of matches and have good rhythm. I’ve had some good weeks outside Brazil. Coincidentally, this was also a rematch from last year, when I lost to him in the first round here. I’m here with my family, I enjoy playing in Brazil and hope to have another good week here,” Reis commented.
