The Costa do Sauipe Open, Brazil’s biggest ATP Challenger tournament, is entering its decisive stage. Friday’s schedule at the Costa do Sauipe Resorts in Bahia features the singles quarterfinals and doubles semi-finals, with the tournament offering US$225,000 in prize money and 125 ATP Ranking points to the singles champion.

Brazil has already secured one place in the singles semi-finals, with Joao Lucas Reis da Silva and Thiago Seyboth Wild set to meet in an all-Brazilian quarterfinal after both delivered convincing performances on Thursday.

Reis da Silva produced an impressive display against Denmark’s Elmer Moller, currently ranked No. 102 in the world, winning 6-2, 6-1. Seyboth Wild was equally convincing for much of his encounter with Uruguay’s Franco Roncadelli, recording a 6-1, 7-6(5) victory.

“I lost in the first round last year, but this season I have been getting good results and feel confident. I played very well today and didn’t give him any opportunities to attack, which is the kind of tennis he likes to play. Being here in Sauipe makes everything even better. It is great to play in Brazil and in front of this crowd,” Reis da Silva said.

Seyboth Wild is expecting a competitive encounter against his compatriot. “Joao has been playing well and getting good results, but there isn’t much more to say other than that it should be a good match. You saw today how quickly things can change: one set took 20 minutes, while the other lasted an hour and a half or something like that. You can never predict how it will go. I’ll sit down with my coach, work out the tactics and go from there,” he explained.

Top seed Diaz Acosta survives thriller

The other quarterfinals have also been determined. Second seed Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina will take on Bolivia’s Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, while another all-South American encounter will see Argentina’s Lautaro Midon face Peru’s Gonzalo Bueno.

Top seed Facundo Diaz Acosta also booked his place in the last eight, although he had to dig deep against Austria’s Filip Misolic. After dropping the opening set 4-6, the Argentine fought back to take the second in a tie-break, 7-6(5), before completing his comeback with a 6-4 third-set victory.

Diaz Acosta will now face Italy’s Marco Cecchinato, who ended the Brazilian challenge of Thiago Monteiro with a straight-sets win, 7-6(5), 6-4.

Brazilian hopes alive in doubles

There will also be Brazilian representation in the doubles semi-finals on Friday. Eduardo Ribeiro and Natan Rodrigues will take on Czech Zdenek Kolar and Argentina’s Santiago Rodriguez Taverna for a place in Saturday’s final.

The other semi-final features Ecuador’s Diego Hidalgo and Argentine Andres Molteni, who will battle for the remaining spot in the championship match.

The second edition of the Costa do Sauipe Open concludes on Sunday, when the singles champion will be crowned in Bahia.
