BRATISLAVA, November 11, 2016

Norbert Gombos headlined quarterfinals action at the €85,000 Peugeot Slovak Open on Friday. The tournament’s local hero defeated Canadian Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 6-3. The world number 161 Bratislava resident saved all seven break points he faced, capitalizing on two of his own chances to secure victory in one hour and 29 minutes.

Gombos will next take on Sergiy Stakhovsky. The 30-year-old from the Ukraine fought past Aleksandr Nedovyesov of Kazakhstan, winning 7-6, 4-6, 7-6. Stakhovsky sent down 13 aces and won 123 of the 241 total points played to prevail in two hours and 38 minutes. Gombos and Stakhovsky will meet for the first time.

Daniil Medvedev is the only seeded player left in the singles draw. The tournament’s number six defeated third favourite Adam Pavlasek from the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3. Medvedev saved all of the three break points he faced, converting three of his own to advance in one hour and 18 minutes. By reaching the stage of the final four, the 20-year-old Russian will break into the Top 100 for the first time on Monday.

Medvedev will next face Marius Copil. The 26-year-old from Romania took out defending champion Egor Gerasimov from Belarus, winning 7-6, 76. In a match without any break points, Copil won four points more than his opponent to prevail after one hour and 34 minutes.

Doubles Final Is Set

In Saturday’s doubles final, third seeded Indians Purav Raja and Divij Sharan will take on the tournament’s number four pair of Ken Skupski and Neal Skupski. The Brits knocked off the top seeds Mariusz Fyrstenberg from Poland and Serbian Nenad Zimonjic, winning 6-4, 7-6. Raja and Sharan fought past Mikhail Elgin from Russia and Denis Istom of Uzbekistan, rallying 3-6, 7-6, 10-3.
