STARNBERG, December 6, 2016
The effects of demonetization in India appear to have hit the third season of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), with the series announcing on Tuesday that this edition will not feature two superstars in Roger Federer and Serena Williams. This will come as a big dissapointment to the Indian spectators in particular, as the 17-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland is the main attraction of the Indian Aces franchise along with local doubles World No. 1 Sania Mirza. Williams is part of the OUE Singapore Slammers
The Official Statement Of The IPTL:
We are sad to announce that Roger Federer and Serena Williams won’t participate at the IPTL this year.
“We have had challenges this year, and we were hoping to get past them. With the current economic climate in India and the uncertainty of spending money, I reached out to both Roger and Serena to explain the situation,” said Mahesh Bhupathi, founder and managing director of the IPTL.
“They have been both been very supportive of the IPTL the first two seasons and we look forward to bring them in future years.”
