The stage is set for the finals of the 2017 SportMaster Tennis Championships of Maui. Second-seed, Hyeon Chung of Korea, will take on the fourth-seed, Taro Daniel from Japan on Sunday in what should be a very competitive match.
The two have had an outstanding tournament so far. Chung hasn’t dropped a single set this entire tournament and Daniel just one. Looking at Saturday’s results, the first match on was between Taro Daniel and Texas Christian University junior, Cameron Norrie. Daniel and Norrie seemed at first very evenly matched but in the end, Daniel’s consistency outlasted Norrie and took the match 6-4, 6-4.
“I thought I played pretty well,” said Daniel. “I didn’t let him into the match too much.” When asked about the conditions, Daniel noted the heat and humidity and the challenges that came along with it. “Today was hot, really hot,” he exuded. “Some people don’t realize it. When you’re walking around it’s nice, but it’s hot for the players.”
Daniel gave some final thoughts on tomorrow’s match against Hyeon Chung. “Chung has had a better career so far and has high expectations from everyone including the ATP,” Daniel said. “Tomorrow’s going to be the toughest match of the tournament.”
Hyeon Chung and Taro Daniel will follow the all-US-American doubles championship between Bradley Klahn and Tennys Sandgren against Austin Krajicek and Jackson Withrow. Play begins at 10:00am local time.
