Local favourite Jerzy Janowicz opened his €85,000 Wroclaw Open campaign on Wednesday with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Czech qualifier Marek Jaloviec.

In front of a with 3,000 spectators packed Hala Orbita, the 26-year-old from Lodz fired 11 aces, some of them with more than 230km/h. Janowicz didn’t face a break point, converting three of his own to advance in 61 minutes. The World No. 188, who captured his sixth ATP Challenger title in Bergamo last Sunday, will next take on eighth seed Jürgen Melzer of Austria.

Bergamo runner-up and the tournament’s number Quentin Halys from France beat local wild card Michal Dembek 6-3, 6-4. The encounter lasted 62 minutes. Halys will face Yann Marti from Switzerland in the second round.

Top seed Paul-Henri Mathieu advanced to the quarterfinals. The World No. 99 from Boulogne-Billancourt edged past Austrian Sebastian Ofner, winning 6-4, 6-2 in one hour and 13 minutes. Next up for Mathieu will be fellow countryman Jonathan Eysseric, who beat Zdenek Kolar from the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-6.
