Alexander Zverev is the champion of the 2017 BMW Open by FWU. The 20-year-old German defeated qualifier Guido Pella of Argentina 6-4, 6-3 in Sunday’s final, which started with a delay of about two hours due to rain.
Zverev had a rusty start into his second title match of the season, losing his opening service game but eventually found his rhythm and gained two breaks to seal the first set in the 10th game.
From then on, the #NextGenATP star was in total control of the match. Zverev won 81 per cent of his second service points and broke serve three times to seal his third ATP career title after one hour and 12 minutes.
He takes away €85,945 in prize money, 250 ATP Ranking points, a brand new BMW i8 as well as a traditional Bavarian Lederhosen.
“It really means a lot to me to win this title here,” Zverev was happy. “After losing the final in Halle, it’s not only my first title in Germany but also my first on clay. Guido did not make many mistakes, so I felt that I had to go for my own shots.”

Zverev only lost one set en-route to the title. “I think that is a good result, as it’s not easy to win this tournament with a couple of good players in the draw.”
The Lederhosen seems to fit well, but there was only one concern with the other prize. “They took my car keys after the ceremony, I hope they will give them back to me.”
Asked what he was doing during rain delay, he simply stated: “I was sleeping for two and a half hours.”
Zverev will be ranked on a new career high World No. 17 on Monday and besides leading in the ATPNextGen Race to Milan he is also keeping an eye on the ATP Race to London.
Zverev will next play the ATP Masters 1000 event in Madrid. “I actually wanted to fly out tonight but now it has become a bit late and there is no flight left. So I will arrive on Monday, opening the tournament on Tuesday against Verdasco, which will be very tough.”
Pella was playing in his second ATP World Tour final and was going for his first ATP World Tour title.
“It was an amazing week for me. I am sad that I didn’t win today but I played against a great player, a great champion,” Pella told

Earlier the day, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah of Colombia beat French tandem of Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin 6-3, 6-3 in the doubles final. The encounter lasted 61 minutes. The third seeds have only lost one set en route to the title and lifted their second trophy of the season following their triumph in Buenos Aires.
“It’s a great tournament here with an outstanding crowd. There are always a lot of people coming out watching the doubles, even in this rainy conditions. Special thanks to all of you and of course to my partner for another successful week,” Farah told during the on-court ceremony.
