KITZBÜHEL, May 8, 2017

The organizers of the Generali Open Kitzbühel announced Monday in Vienna the first players to compete in this year’s ATP 250 event held from 29 July to 5 August 2017.

Former Spanish top 10 David Ferrer, Pablo Cuevas from Uruguay, Frenchman Gilles Simon and German veteran Tommy Haas will be part of the line-up in Tyrol. Defending champion Paolo Lorenzi of Italy, Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, who captured the title here in 2015, Dustin Brown as well as Viktor Troicki from Serbia will also return to the Kitzbühel Alps.

Only local hero Dominic Thiem will not play his home tournament this year, as the Austrian youngster wants to get ready for the hard court swing. The Generali Open is the last clay court event in the 2017 ATP World Tour calendar.

“Two former champions and three former top 10 players will come to Kitzbühel. We are very confident to add more great players to the list, looking forward to a great final line-up. Deadline to enter the tournament is on June 19,” tournament director Alexander Antonitsch told.

Tommy Haas, who recently returned to the courts at the BMW Open by FWU in Munich, losing in the second round to compatriot Jan-Lennard Struff, will also continue his 2017 farewell tour in Austria.

“I am very pleased to return to Kitzbühel, as I lived here for some time. It is probably going to be my last clay court event,” Haas stated.

“To watch Tommy playing on clay for a very last time is great. It will be an emotional affair,” Antonitsch is pleased and added that the 39-year-old German will be joined by Austrian veteran Jürgen Melzer and his brother Gerald.

In 2016, the tournament has almost hit the mark of 50,000 spectators attending the event. This happened for the last time during Austria’s tennis heydays with Thomas Muster in the 1990s. We will see, if the record will be cracked this year.
