Valkusz Joins German Trio In Karlsruhe Open Semi-Finals

Hungarian teenager Mate Valkusz joins three German players in the semi-finals of the Karlsruhe Open, a $15,000 ITF Pro Circuit tournament held on clay at the venue of the Karlsruher ETV 1911.

Valkusz rallied past Peter Heller 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in Friday’s quarterfinal encounter. The 19-year-old broke serve five times to prevail after two hours and 19 minutes. Valkusz will next challenge the tournament’s number one Sebastian Fanselow. The World No. 339 defeated Austrian qualifier Daniel Kopeinigg 6-4, 6-4.

Benjamin Hassan from Neuwied upset seventh favourite Florian Fallert 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 to face second seed Jan Choinski in the stage of the final four. Koblenz resident Choinski beat reigning Roland Garros juniors champion Alexei Popyrin of Australia 7-5, 6-3.

In Saturday’s doubles final, Frenchmen Dan Added and Hugo Daubias will take on German tandem of Florian Faller and Peter Heller.
