Roger Federer extended his winning streak against No. 31 seed Feliciano López of Spain to 13 matches in Saturday’s night session at the US Open.
The 36-year-old Swiss, who had survived two five-set matches to advance to the third round in Flushing Meadows for the 17th time, fired 13 aces and broke serve five times to seal a 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory in one hour and 46 minutes. Federer is now 33-1 in night matches at the US Open, the best record since 1980.
“I think I really got off to a good start. The first set was fast. Then the second set was close. Maybe I was struggling with my serve for a little bit to keep the level up,” Federer said.
“It was also good to get through those tougher moments. A little bit of a wobble in the third maybe. But it’s all good. I’m really pleased with the performance.”
Keys Finishes Late-Night Action

Madison Keys from the United States clinched eight of the last nine games in a late-night thriller against reigning BNP Paribas Open champion Elena Vesnina to reach the second week of the US Open.
The 15th seed won 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 at 1:45 a.m. to complete the fourth round in New York. The late-night finish record of 1:48 a.m. was set in a match won by Keys against Alison Riske in the opening round a year ago. The 22-year-old will play the tournament’s number four Elina Svitolina of Ukraine next.
