WUHAN, September 19, 2017 (Press Release)
China’s Qiang Wang, Yingying Duan and rising Swiss star Jil Teichmann are set to join this year’s star-studded Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open field after accepting wildcards. All three will join newly-crowned US Open champion Sloane Stephens, US Open runner-up Madison Keys, World No.1 Garbine Muguruza and a host of Top 20 players in the main draw.
The US$2,666,000 WTA Premier 5 tournament, held at the Optics Valley International Tennis Centre from 22-30 September 2017, traditionally attracts one of the strongest line-ups of the season in its main draw. Play begins in qualifying this Friday (22nd) before main draw play gets underway on Sunday.
Twenty-year-old Teichmann is currently ranked 165 in the world and is making her way on the WTA Tour after a successful junior career.
Qiang Wang and Yingying Duan, currently ranked 57 and 97 respectively, will join countrywomen Shuai Peng and Shuai Zhang to ensure that China has at least four home players in the Main Draw for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Under WTA Tour rules, the tournament has two further wildcards available for players from the year-end Top 20 list. These have yet to be decided. If they are not awarded then the first two players in the main draw alternates list will move up into the main draw.
