Dominic Thiem‘s season has come to an end. The 24-year-old Austrian, who had opened his Nitto ATP Finals campaign on Monday with a three set loss to Grigor Dimitrov and followed with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win against Pablo Carreno Busta, lost his final round robin match on Friday afternoon to David Goffin.

“I had a very, very good start,” told Thiem, who was a break up in the opening set, in his post match press conference. “Then I made some very bad mistakes. I let him back into the game. Somehow after the 3-0, I lost it until the end.”

Thiem played 27 tournaments this season highlighted by his triumph at the ATP 500 event in Rio de Janeiro. Asked if this is something he will look at next year in terms of his schedule, the World No. 4 said:

“It doesn’t have to do anything with the amount of tournaments. The US Open was very painful. Maybe it would be easier if I would have won it and went out of the tournament with more confidence than after this defeat against Juan Martin del Potro. Before the US Open and at the US Open I lost three very close matches with match points. I think nobody forgets it. It’s maybe still on my mind. It was a tough period to lose all these important as well as tight matches.”

Thiem advanced to the semi-finals at Roland Garros and made it to the stage of the final 16 at each of the other three Grand Slam tournaments.

“The bigger the events or the stages get, the better the players are. You have to play well. You have to compete well. That’s what I didn’t do today.”

Thiem will now have some to time to relax and recharge his batteries. He will start the new season at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi followed by the ATP 250 event in Doha.
