Hyeon Chung

MELBOURNE, January 24, 2018

Roger Federer and Hyeon Chung will meet in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Federer defeated Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in their 10th Grand Slam match in Wednesday’s night session on Rod Laver Arena.

The World No. 2 struck 15 aces, winning 83 per cent of his first service points to secure victory in two hours and 14 minutes.

“I hung around, got a bit lucky, a bit angry, a frustrated, maybe at the umpire, but I actually thought the call was good anyway,” Federer told during his on-court interview. “I was just frustrated and a bit antsy. I’m happy I got out of that first set. It ended up being key to the match. Tomas was great.”

Chung Dismisses Sandgren

Federer will now play #NextGenATP champion Hyeon Chung. The 21-year-old from Korea defeated US-American Tennys Sandgren 6-4, 7-6, 6-3. Chung broke serve four times and prevailed after two hours and 28 minutes to become the lowest-ranked man to make the stage of the final four in Melbourne since No. 86 Marat Safin in 2004.

“[In the] last game many things come together. If I win one more point, I make history in Korea… I had to stay calm because the finish – the match is not finished yet, so I’m just trying to stay calm until [I] finish the match,” Chung said of his thoughts. “I think all the people [in Korea are] watching Australian Opennow because we make history in Korea.”
