Jordan Thompson is the champion of the $50,000 2018 Chennai Open. The top seed from Australia fought past second favourite Yuki Bhambri of India 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in Saturday’s singles final.
Thompson, who defeated Wishaya Trongcharoenchaikul, Danilo Petrovic and Pedro Martínez en route to the title match, won one point less than the local hero, but gained one break more in the third set to secure victory in two hours and 37 minutes.
By lifting his fifth ATP Challenger trophy, his first since 2016, Thompson earned $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP ranking points.
N. Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan of India captured the doubles title. The No. 2 seedes edged past Cem Ilkel of Turkey and Serbian Danilo Petrovic in Friday’s final 7-6, 5-7, 10-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 44 minutes.
