Canada’s #NextGenATP star Denis Shapovalov will join the line-up at this year’s MercedesCup, held at the TC Weissenhof from 9 to 17 June 2018. This was annnounced by the organizers of the ATP 250 grass court event on Tuesday afternoon.
Shapovalov won the 2016 Wimbledon junior singles title and the 2015 US Open junior doubles title with compatriot Félix Auger-Aliassime. The Tel Aviv native was a semi-finalist at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Montréal last year, beating Juan Martín del Potro and Rafael Nadal during his run. 18-year-old Shapovalov is currently the youngest player ranked inside the top 100 of the ATP World Tour rankings. He reached a career high World No. 44 on March 5.
“Grass is my favourite surface and I enjoy playing in Germany. I have already heard a lot of positives things about the tournament. I am really eager to see what’s in store for me,” Shapovalov is looking forward to his debut in Stuttgart. The teenager will also return to the tournament in 2019.
Shapovalov joins a star-studded field including #NextGenATP champion Hyeon Chung, Frenchman Gael Monfils, Aussie Nick Kyrgios, Spanish veteran Feliciano López, World No. 4 Grigor Dimitrov as well as defending champion Lucas Pouille of France.
