AO Press Release, August 28, 2018
In an Australian Open first, Tennis Australia has joined forces with the Commune Group to welcome its latest offering Beijing Betty to Melbourne Park this summer.
The brand new pop-up restaurant, developed by executive chef Anthony Choi will give AO fans a true taste of Melbourne’s vibrant foodie landscape.
Offering a 200 person dine-in or ‘grab and go’ experience, Beijing Betty will deliver a modern Melbourne take on Cantonese classics including; wild mushroom bao, sweet and sour crispy pork hock with charred pineapple and tamarind, and a selection of roast duck and Cantonese-style pork chopped to order and ready to roll for fans.
Tennis Australia’s Head of Onsite Revenue Enda Cunningham is delighted to add Beijing Betty to the line-up of exceptional food offerings available at the Australia Open.
“We are extremely excited to team up with Commune Group to bring Beijing Betty, a brand new restaurant, to life at Melbourne Park during the Australian Open and provide more choice than ever before for our fans,” he said.
Commune Group Director Simon Blacher said Beijing Betty will encompass the company’s innovative attitude and extensive hospitality expertise delivering the much-loved vibe that the group’s restaurants including Tokyo Tina, Hanoi Hannah and retired Saigon Sally are famed for.
“We are drawing inspiration from the vibrant streets of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, with subtle nods to Melbourne right now,” he said.
“The Australian Open has so many diverse offerings, so we are looking to pay homage to Chinatown through a contemporary lens with an ‘80s-to-now’ representation of East meets West.”
Critically acclaimed restaurants Rockpool and Nobu will also return to the Australian Open following the success of their debut appearance in 2018.
Premium pop-up event AO Chef Series will also be back at The Glasshouse, with Alejandro Saravia returning to present his produce to plate concept, Farmer’s Daughters. Alejandro will be joined this year by multi Michelin-starred chefs Albert Roux and Simone Zanoni with Australia’s No.5 restaurant Africola completing the line-up.
“The Australian Open is not only the biggest global sporting event in January, it is also a celebration of food and entertainment for more than a million fans,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said.
“We pride ourselves on creating memorable experiences at the Australian Open, with the spectacular on court action from the world’s best players complemented by world-class food and entertainment, both from Australia and around the world.”
