Garbine Muguruza wins the first set before falling in a stunning 6-3, 4-6, 4-6 loss to world No.202 Karolina Muchova late on Wednesday night at the US Open.
The former world No.1 from Spain, joins current World No.1 Simona Halep on the sidelines. The duo were both in the top quarter of the women’s draw, where the focus in now squarely on the third-round clash of the Williams sisters.
Playing at her first Grand Slam and facing a top 40 opponent for the first time, Muchova sent down eight aces, winning 63 per cent of her first service points to prevail after two hours and 27 minutes.

“First moment for me on a big stadium,” Muchova said in her on-court, post-match interview. “I got used to it a little, and somehow I made it.” The 22-year-old Czech qualifier will next challenge Australia’s No. 18 seed Ashleigh Barty in Friday’s third round.
