Ernests Gulbis and Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet in Sunday’s singles final of the Intrum Stockholm Open. Gulbis has reached his first title match since Nice in May 2014 after claiming his 19th Top 10 win in semi-final on Saturday over World No. 10 John Isner from the United States.
The 30-year-old qualifier from Latvia rallied past the tournament’s top seed 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Gulbis withstood 13 aces, firing 11 of his own to prevail after one hour and 48 minutes.
“I was fighting for every point,” said Gulbis. “I think I returned a lot smarter in the second and third set.” The Riga native could become the first qualifier to lift the trophy in Stockholm in the Open Era, ending a four-year title drought.
Tsitsipas beat No. 2 seed Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-2. The #NextGenATP star from Greece saved all four break points he faced, converting three of his own to advance in one hour and 16 minutes.
“[Fabio] is a player that has been in the Top 20 for many years,” said Tsitsipas. “He won many titles this year and has had a fantastic year. This victory has a lot of value to it.”
Tsitsipas is playing his thrid final on the ATP World Tour, seeking his first title. Gulbis and Tsitsipas will meet for the first time.
