Elias Ymer has finished his season by lifting his second ATP Challenger trophy of the season. The 22-year-old from Sweden clinched the singles title of the KPIT MSLTA ATP Challenger in Pune.
Ymer, No. 3 seed at the $50,000 ATP Challenger hard-court event, defeated local favourite Prajnesh Gunneswaran 6-2, 7-5 in Saturday’s final at the Mhalunge-Balewadi Tennis Complex. The Stockholm resident fired 12 aces, saving all four break points he faced. Ymer broke his opponent’s serve three times to prevail after one hour and 27 minutes.
By claiming his sixth ATP Challenger career title, his second in 2018 following his triumph in Mouilleron-Le-Captif, Ymer takes away $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP-Ranking points.
Gunneswaran also enjoyed a successful season. The 29-year-old from Chennai clinched the bronze medal at the Asia Games and showed some remarkable consistency on the ATP Challenger Tour, highlighted by two titles in Anning and Bagalore, which will propel him to a career high World No. 104 on Monday.
Earlier in the day, N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth and Ramkumar Ramanathan took the doubles title. The all-Indian duo battled past Cheng-Peng Hsieh and Tsung-Hua Yamng of Taipei 7-6(3), 6-7(5), 10-7. The encounter lasted one hour and 49 minutes.
