Danylo Kalenichenko headlined Wednesday’s first round action at the MLP Cup in Nußloch by knocking out Frenchman Antoine Escoffier, the highest ranked player left in the singles draw. The top two seeds of the M25 ITF World Tennis Tour Event also fell in the opening stage of the tournament.
The 24-year-old from the Ukraine struck nine aces, winning 78 per cent of his first service points to secure victory in two hours and 36 minutes. Kalenichenko will next take on Peter Torebko of Germany, who beat Polish qualifier Szymon Walkow 6-4, 7-6(5) in one hour and 35 minutes.
Earlier in the day, Kai Wehnelt upset the No. 6 seed of the $25,000 event, Arjun Kadhe from India, 7-6(3), 7-6(6). The lucky loser from Germany outpointed his opponent 86-84 in one hour and 49 minutes. Up next for Wehnelt will be compatriot Peter Heller, who eased past British qualifier Andrew Watson 6-3, 6-2 in 75 minutes.
