SAVANNAH, May 2, 2019
Second round action at the St. Joseph’s/Candler (SJ/C) Savannah Challenger continued on Wednesday with US-American favorite Tommy Paul opening up his 2019 campaign.
The 21-year-old American kicked off against ITF-entry Sandro Ehrat and was neck and neck with the Ehrat until late in the first when the Swiss made his push and took the opening set 7-5. Paul battled back in the second to take it 6-3 and force a third. In the final set he was able to secure the break and close out the match with a final score of 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 after two hours and 14 minutes.

Earlier in the afternoon, No. 4 seed Noah Rubin took to the court against fellow US-American Collin Altamirano. Rubin was looking to win his first match on the green clay of Savannah and quickly ran away with the opening set 6-2. Altamirano had different plans, taking a early break in the second and holding serve to take the second set 6-2. In the deciding set, Altamirano continued to out-play a rattled Rubin, and close out the match with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 win in one hour and 42 minutes.
Meanwhile over on Toyota Savannah Court, No. 14 seed Thai-Son Kwiatkowski took on Andrea Collarini of Argentina. The 24-year-old US-American raced through the opening set 6-3, but was tested in the second as Collarini forced him to play deep into the set. Kwiatkowski prevailed though with a final score of 6-3, 7-5 after one hour and 33 minutes.
Off the court, the tournament hosted Ladies Day. The event will featured on-court tennis activities, retail shopping, food & wine specials, and player appearances by Petr Korda, Jackson Withrow, Anderson Reed, and Ian Dempster.
Play gets underway on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. with No. 3 seed Corentin Moutet taking on American Thai-Son Kwiatkowski. At 5:30 p.m. in the featured evening match, wild card Sebastian Korda battles it out against Sumit Nagal. Korda will be looking for his seventh win of the past two weeks to advance to a second career ATP Challenger quarterfinal.
