Ferreira Upsets Braga Open Top Seed Fratangelo To Reach The Third Round

The local players headlined Wednesday’s second round action at the Braga Open. World No. 334 Frederico Ferreira Silva knocked out US-American Bjorn Fratangelo, top seed of the €46,600 ATP Challenger clay-court event, winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Ferreira Silva broke his opponent’s serve six times to prevail after two hours and 23 minutes. “I am very happy. This has been one of my best wins in my career,” the 24-year-old from Caldas da Rainha said. “Now it’s important to recover, being ready for the next match.”

Ferreira Silva will take on Bernabé Zapata Miralles of Spain, who eased past No. 15 seeded Russian Evgeny Karlovskiy 6-1, 6-4.

Domingues continues good run of form

Earlier in the day, Joao Domingues continued his great run of form. The 25-year-old Portuguese, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the Millennium Estoril Open last week, defeated Oriol Raca Batalla 6-2, 6-4. Domingues won 58 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and 21 minutes.

Up next for the No. 13 seed will be Brazilian Joao Magalhaes Hueb de Menezes. The ITF-entry of Brazil upset No. 3 seed Mitchell Krueger from the United States, winning 7-5, 6-2. The World No. 358 capitalized on four of his seven break point opportunities to finish the encounter in one hour and 30 minutes.

The tournament’s No. 2, Facundo Bagnis from Argentina, advanced to the third round. The highest ranked player left in the singles draw beat Pavel Nejedly from the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-2 to meet Mario Vilella Martínez of Spain next.
