COLUMBUS, June 17, 2019

Former Buckeye standout Mikael Torpegaard clinched the title of the $54,160 June Columbus Challenger held on hard court at the Ohio State University. The No. 8 seed from Denmark defeated Ji Sung Nam of South Korea 6-1, 7-5 in Sunday’s singles final.

Torpegaard advanced to the championship match with wins over US-Americans Raymond Sarmiento, Tim Smyczek, No. 2 seeded Japanese Yasutaka Uchiyama and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski from the United States. The World No. 170 won 56 per cent of the total points played to secure victory in one hour and seven minutes.

Following his maiden triumph on the ATP Challenger Tour also here in Columbus in 2016, Torpegaard lifted his second trophy and pocketed $7,200 in prize money as well as 80 ATP-Ranking points.

Earlier in the day, Roberto Maytin of Venezuela and US-American Jackson Withrow took the doubles title. The top seeds battled past Hans Hach Verdugo of Mexico and Donald Young from the United States, winning 6-7(4), 7-6(2), 10-5. The encounter lasted one hour and 36 minutes.
