Jurij Rodionov headlined Wednesday’s second-round action at the Rafa Nadal Open by Sotheby’s International Realty. The 20-year-old Austrian knocked out World No. 89 Peter Gojowczyk from Germany, top seed of the €46,600 ATP Challenger hard-court event, winning 7-6(4), 6-4.

Rodionov capitalized on three of his four break point chances to secure victory in one hour and 26 minutes. Up next for the #NextGenATP player will be Botic van de Zandschulp from the Netherlands, who benefited from the retirement of Mario Vilella Martinez of Spain, leading 6-2, 4-1.

Meanwhile, Daniel Masur emerged victorious from the all-German affair beating No. 2 seed and last year’s runner-up Matthias Bachinger 2-6, 6-0, 6-4. The 24-year-old Buckeburg native sent down seven aces, winning 76 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 39 minutes. Masur will next take on Lucas Miedler from Austria, who edged out Argentine veteran Carlos Berlocq 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4. The encounter lasted two hours and 32 minutes.

Later in the afternoon, Yannick Maden booked his spot in the third round with a hard fought win against Altug Celikbilek of Turkey. The No. 4 seed from Germany rallied from a set down to seal a 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 win in two hours and 45 minutes. Maden will next play 15th seed Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland, who beat Brazilian young gun Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-3, 7-6(5).

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated Peter Heller of Germany 7-5, 6-4. The fifth seed from Spain saved nine of the 10 break points he faced, capitalizing on three of his own four chances to finish the encounter in one hour and 20 minutes.

“It was a pretty tough match but I played a very solid match. I am happy to reach the next round to increase self-confidence,” Davidovich Fokina said. The 20-year-old from Malaga will next face compatriot Adrian Menendez Maceiras, who ousted Uladzimir Ignatik from Belarus 6-3, 6-2.
