Gianluca Mager has claimed his third ATP Challenger title of the season by lifting the trophy of the Thindown Challenger Biella held at the Biella Tennis Academy ASD. The No. 8 seed of the €46,600 clay-court event fought past No. 4 seed and fellow Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-0, 6-7(4), 7-5 in Sunday’s singles final.
Mager advanced to the championship match with wins over Oriol Roca Batalla of Spain, Peter Heller from Germany, Spanish veteran Tommy Robredo and #NextGen ATP star Jaume Munar. The 24-year-old from Sanremo struck nine aces in the final and won 73 per cent of his first-service points to secure victory in two hours and 17 minutes.
Following his triumphs at the Koblenz Open and on home soil in Barletta earlier this year, Mager earns his third ATP Challenger career title. He took away from the northern Italian region of Piedmont €6,190 in prize money as well as 80 ATP Ranking points.
On Saturday, Tomislav Brkic from Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ante Pavic of Croatia were crowned doubles champions. The No. 2 seeds edged past Ariel Behar of Uruguay and Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 7-6(2), 6-4. The final lasted one hour and 25 minutes.
