Top seed Tommy Paul opened his title bid at the First Republic Tiburon Challenger with a three-set win over US-American wild card entry Brandon Holt on Wednesday. The World No. 87 from the United States converted four of his six break point opportunities to seal a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 in one hour and 48 minutes.
Paul will next take on Hugo Gaston of France, who defeated No. 13 seed Daniel Elahi Galan of Colombia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 34 minutes.
Roberto Quiroz from Ecuador caused the upset of the day by knocking out the tournament’s No. 2 Denis Kudla from the United States, winning 6-3, 6-2. The 27-year-old from Guayaquil won 87 per cent of his first-service points and 61 per cent of the total points played to advance to the third round after only 61 minutes.
Quiroz will next play No. 16 seeded US-American Maxime Cressy, who emerged victorious from the encounter with his compatriot JJ Wolf. Cressy won 6-1, 6-4 in one hour and 15 minutes.
