Yuichi Sugita booked his spot in the second round of the Intrum Stockholm Open by knocking out local wild card -entry Elias Ymer on Tuesday evening. The Japanese lucky loser won 7-6(6), 6-2.
Sugita capitalized on five of his nine break point chances to prevail after one hour and 40 minutes. The 31-year-old from Tokyo will next face Italy’s Stefano Travaglia.
Earlier in the day, Pablo Carreno Busta remained untroubled in his match against John Millman from Australia. The No. 5 seed from Spain saved all four break point he faced and converted three of his own eight chances to seal a 6-4, 6-3 victory in one hour and 29 minutes.
Carreno Busta will next take on Italian lucky loser Gianluca Mager, who rallied past Spaniard Pablo Andujar 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in one hour and 40 minutes.
Qualifiers Alexei Popyrin and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe also advanced to the second round of the ATP 250 event. Australia’s Popyrin fought past German lucky loser Oscar Otte 7-6(6), 7-6(5), and Stebe of Germany had to go the distance against Brayden Schnur from Canada, winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
