No. 2 seed Taro Daniel opened his title bid at the Las Vegas Tennis Open with a 6-4, 7-6(4) win on Tuesday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas. The World No. 109 from Japan broke his opponent’s serve two times and won 55 per cent of the total points played to advance to the third round after one hour and 41 minutes.
Daniel will next take on either Gonzalo Escobar of Ecuador or No. 15 seed Donald Young from the United States.
Stefan Kozlov caused the upset of the day by knocking out the tournament’s No. 4 seed Blaz Rola of Slovenia. The 21-year-old wild card entry converted all of his four break point chances to secure a 6-4, 6-3 victory in one hour and 23 minutes. Next up for the young US-American will be the winner of the encounter between Alexander Ritschard from the United States and No. 14 seed Alejandro Tabilo of Chile.
Top seed Steve Johnson, who finished runner-up to Australian Christopher O’Connell at last week’s NorthBay Healthcare Men’s Pro Championship in Fairfield, will step into action on Wednesday taking on fellow US-American JC Aragone.
