Ugo Humbert booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the €92,040 Open Brest Credit Agricole. The top seed from France defeated Evgeny Karlovskiy of Russia 7-6(2), 6-4 on Thursday evening.
Humbert, a two time ATP Challenger Tour champion this season on home soil in Cherbourg and Istanbul, Turkey, sent down 11 aces and won 88 per cent of his first-service points to prevail after one hour and 21 minutes. The World No. 63 from Metz will next take on fellow countryman and No. 7 seed Antoine Hoang, who beat Zdenek Kolar from the Czech Republic 6-2, 7-6(5) in one hour and 31 minutes.
No. 2 seed Roberto Carballes Baena also advanced to the stage of the final eight. The 26-year-old Tenerife native emerged victorious from the all-Spanish encounter with veteran Guillermo Garcia Lopez, winning 7-5, 7-6(3). Carballes Baena capitalized on all of his three break point chances to seal victory in one hour and 44 minutes. Up next for the World No. 81 from Granada will be Russian Evgeny Donskoy. The eighth seed of the ATP Challenger 100 event had to fight hard to overcome Frenchman Hugo Grenier 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 after two hours and nine minutes.
Recent Nur-Sultan Challenger champion Illya Marchenko from the Ukraine taking on No. 9 seed and former World No. 80 Norbert Gombos of Slovakia, as well as #NextGenATP South African Lloyd Harris facing Corentin Denolly round out Friday’s quarterfinal line-up at Brest Arena. Matches will start at 12:30 pm.
