Pedro Sousa opened his home campaign at the Maia Open in Portugal with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 second-round win over Javier Marti of Spain on Wednesday evening. The No. 8 seed of the €46,600 ATP Challenger event converted seven of his 17 break point chances to prevail after two hours and 44 minutes.
Up next for Sousa will be Italian Riccardo Bonadio.
Earlier in the day, Daniel Masur from Germany knocked out Thomas Fabbiano of Italy, winning 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 after one hour and 56 minutes to set a third round clash with No. 14 seed Joao Domingues from Portugal.
Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi started his title bid with a hard-fought win over Jurij Rodionov of Austria in the longest match of the day. The No. 3 seed outpointed his opponent 122-120 to secure a 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(3) in three hours and five minutes. Lorenzi will next take on compatriot and No. 16 seed Filippo Baldi.
