Top seed Andrej Martin booked his spot in the quarterfinals of the Maia Open, the final ATP Challenger event of the season held on indoor clay at the Complexo Municipal de Tenis da Maia. The World No. 110 from Slovakia fought past Vit Kopriva from the Czech Republic 7-5, 2-6, 6-0 on Thursday afternoon.
Martin didn’t face a break point and converted all of his three own break point chances to secure victory in two hours and two minutes. The three time ATP Challenger champion this year will next take on Riccardo Bonadio of Italy, who knocked out local favourite and No. 8 seed Pedro Sousa, winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in two hours and 26 minutes.
Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi also advanced to the stage of the final eight. The No. 3 seed rallied from a set down to overcome his compatriot Filippo Baldi 1-6, 7-6(7), 6-3. Lorenzi won three points less but prevailed after two hours and 25 minutes. The 37-year-old from Rome will next face Jozef Kovalik of Slovakia.
Joao Domingues is the last Portuguese standing in the singles draw of the €46,600 event. The No. 14 seed beat Daniel Masur of Germany 7-6(3), 6-2 in one hour and 44 minutes to meet Italian qualifier Andrea Vavassori. In the remaining quarterfinal Frenchman Constant Lestienne will oppose Roberto Marcora of Italy.
