KOBLENZ, February 19, 2020

The top two seeds of the Koblenz Open began their title bid on Tuesday by reaching the third round of the €46,600 ATP Challenger event.

The tournament’s No. 1, Yannick Maden, who is still seeking his first ATP Challenger title, started his home campaign with a hard-fought win over wild card entry Louis Wessels from Germany. The World No. 144 withstood 10 aces and broke Wessels’ serve four times to secure a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 victory in two hours and 25 minutes.

Maden will next oppose the winner of the encounter between No. 16 seed and last year’s semi-finalist Pavel Kotov of Russia and lucky loser Ergi Kirkin of Turkey.

Later in the evening, Yannick Hanfmann also had to go the distance against 20-year-old Czech Michael Vrbensky. The World No. 149 from Germany sent down nine aces and won 71 per cent of his first-service points to advance by the score of 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(5) after two hours and 34 minutes. Hanfmann will next take on the winner of the match between Lucas Miedler of Austria and Indian qualifier Sasikumar Mukund.

No. 7 seed Quentin Halys stopped the run of German teenager Milan Welte, who celebrated his first match win on the ATP Challenger Tour on Monday against Adam Pavlasek. The 23-year-old Frenchman won 58 per cent of the total points played to prevail 7-5, 6-2 after one hour and 12 minutes. Halys will next play either Artem Dubrivnyy from Russia or Belgian veteran and 2017 Koblenz Open champion Ruben Bemelmans.
