Due to public health concerns linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, this year’s entire grass-court swing has been cancelled. This was announced by the ATP, WTA and the All England Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday.
This will also affect the 2020 edition of the MercedesCup in Stuttgart, which was scheduled to take place on 29 June to 12 July at the venue of the Tennis Club Weissenhof. Austria’s e-motion group, organizers of the ATP 250 event, are now examining possible options for hosting the tournament later this year.

“Now it is all about to contain the spread of the corona pandemic by adhering to official measures so that the virus can be treated medically the best possible way. Health is the most important thing. This clearly also applies to tennis at all levels,” MercedesCup tournament director Edwin Weindorfer emphasized in a press release.
“In the upcoming days and weeks, we will not only have intensive discussions with the ATP about a possible postponement of the MercedesCup, but of course with all of our partners, too. The prerequisite for this is that the current situation will improve and matches on the ATP Tour can resume. Holding the tournament must not pose any health risk for the players, officials, the tournament staff or the fans,” added Weindorfer, who also receives full support from the local club:
“The MercedesCup is the absolute highlight of our tennis season, so we will go along with all the necessary decisions to maybe hold the tournament this season,” said Dr. Gert Brandner, chairman of the Tennis Club Weissenhof.
